2012 International Fairs
Our year at the 2012 London and Frankfurt fairs focused on wholesale distribution contracts while the majority of European publishers continued to struggle to sort out integrating the ebook format into their rights and marketing programs.
A simultaneous, fair-long conference on digital issues held for publishers and editors attending the London fair substantially hurt appointments for rights sales by keeping them out of the Rights Centre and off the exhibit floors.
With some adjustments to our work at the fair, however, we came back from London with distribution offers in Alternative Health, Autobiography, Business, Fiction, Foreign Affairs, Health, History, Literary, Mind/Body/Spirit, New Age/metaphysics, Philosophy, Religion, Science and Self-Help.
We came back from Frankfurt with offers for distribution contracts for books in the areas of Animals & Nature, Autobiography, Biography & Memoirs, Business, Collectibles, Cooking, Current Affairs, Environmental, Grief & Healing, Health, History, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Photography, Psychology, Religion, Self-Help, and Travel.
By the end of Frankfurt, after two years of disruption brought on by the far greater success of ebook sales in the U.S. than abroad, European publishers reached the rather sensible conclusions that ebooks should be treated in regard to sales, marketing and acquiring rights just as they treat printed titles.
With the issues of virtual books seemingly settled, 2013 should be a "new day" for the old ways of buying and selling rights and license at fairs.
If anything, rights and license purchases should increase in 2013. The cost/profit ratio per unit (book) tips heavily to the profit when delivering a digital file rather than a printed book.
With a now-cleared playing field, we're very much looking forward to our April London marketing and our 25th consecutive Frankfurt in October.
