The 2005 Frankfurt Book Fair

2005 was an excellent year for Frankfurt!

We returned with contracts in hand for titles in the areas of business, cooking, gifts/humor, golf, health, history, literature, management, martial arts, medical, New Age, nursing, photography, popular culture, religion, and self-help.

Besides the contract offers in hand, we also returned with reading copy requests in 23 subject genres:

Animals; Autobiography / Biography; Business / Management; Children / YA; Cooking; Current Events; Education; Fiction; Health; History; Humor; Martial Arts; New Age; Parenting; Personal Finance; Philosophy; Photography; Popular Culture; Psychology; Religion; Self-Help; Sports; and Women.

The malaise that settled on the international book industry following the 9/11 attacks has ended. Once again, the business of Frankfurt is books.

Here are some photos from our stand. Although we marketed books in most genres as one can tell from the response to our sales work at the fair, we had an especially large number of literary guests since 2005.

Seattle publisher and writer Jerry Gold shares a good moment with his author Leonard Chang (The Fruit 'N Food and Dispatches from the Cold, novels published by Jerry's company Black Heron Press in 1996 and 1998 respectively). In conjunction with Frankfurt's selection of Korea as the focal country for the 2005 fair, the U.S. government and German cultural organizations sponsored a reading tour of the country and an appearance at the fair by the Korean-American author.

Harry Smith joins in a belated Bukowskian celebration of the Czech publication of Gerald Locklin's Charles Bukowski a Sure Bet (Water Row Press) with the book's Czech publishers Volvox Globator. With Harry are Volvox publisher Vit Hruska, foreign rights editor Ladislav Senkyrik, and an associate editor. We sold the title to Volvox at a previous Frankfurt Fair.

Next is London. The dates for the 2006 fair there are March 5-7.
